Humbled, Again!

Caden's preschool sometimes posts funny quotes from preschoolers on its Facebook page. This week's post was about a four-year-old boy who was staring off into space. When the teacher asked him if he was okay and asked him what he was thinking about, the little boy replied, "I was just thinking. It's been weeks since I have gotten a good night's sleep." My first thought was, "Oh, no! That's the boy who is going to sleep his way through high school."

Later that night, while tucking Caden in, he told Colby and me that he fell asleep on the snack table at school and his friend had to wake him up. Immediately, I started cracking up because I had a gut feeling that it was my son who told the teacher that he has not had a good night's sleep in weeks. After a quick e-mail, I found out that it was my son's quote.

It is my son--the teacher's son--who is going to be sleeping his way through high school. . .

This is not the first time I have been humbled as a parent. . .and I'm sure it will not be my last. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get much sympathy from my own mom!

Grocery Store Epiphany

At the grocery store. . .

"Mom, those kids are like chocolate!"-Caden
"Yes, that's how God made them. Don't they have beautiful skin?"-Mom
"Yes, and He made some of us lemon!"-Caden

Cheerios for All!

It is good to know that Caden is not only becoming self-sufficient, but he is beginning to look out for his little brother as well.

Apparently, Carter enjoyed breakfast in bed this morning, "Mom, I had Cheerios for breakfast. . .and so did Carter!"-Caden (4-years-old)

Guess what I had for breakfast this morning?!

Photo Friday: "Sashi"

This has been a tough week for our family.  Our family dog, Sasha (nicknamed "Sashi" by Caden), became very ill and had to be put down.  It happened so quickly and took us all by surprise.  Caden is having a difficult time processing Sasha's death:

Monday

Mom:  "Caden, Sashi is very sick.  She has to go to the doctor and I don't know if she's going to get better."
Caden:  "That's okay.  We can get a new dog."

Tuesday

Nana:  "Sasha went to be with Jesus."
Caden:  "Nan, Jesus is in the Bible!"

Wednesday

Caden:  "Mom, Sashi died."
Mom:  "I know.  I am so sorry."
Caden:  "She's in the Bible now."
Mom:  "I think Sashi's in heaven."
Caden:  "I don't want to go to heaven.  I don't want Mommy to go to heaven. I don't want Daddy to go to heaven."

Thursday

Caden:  "Mom, I miss Sashi."
Mom:  "I know Caden.  I do too."
Caden:  "Maybe we can get a new dog."
Mom:  "I don't think we're going to get a new dog."
Caden: "Just think about it.  Please! Just think about it!"

Sashi was a good dog and we miss her very much.  This is my favorite photo of her.

Bible Stories Continued: "Jesus and the Leper"

Mom:  "Who is Jesus?"
Caden:  "You know. . .He's in the Bible!" (in a "you-should-already-know-that" tone)
Mom:  "What did He do?"
Caden:  "He went up into the clouds to get away from the leper."
Mom:  "The leper?"
Caden:  "Yeah, the leper was sick and then he touched Jesus's clothes and then he was not sick anymore."
Mom: "And Jesus went into the clouds to get away from the leper?"
Caden:  "Yeah!"

"There's a Wommer!"

For quite some time, Caden has been afraid of "wommers." We don't know what a "wommer" is or where the idea originated.  He says they are all white with no eyes, nose, or mouth.  Supposedly, they live through our laundry room door that goes to our backyard.  This morning, while Caden and I were looking at Pinterest, he screamed, "There's a 'wommer'!" He was referring to the following pin.  He said, "See, it doesn't have any eyes!" Well, I guess we now know what a "wommer" looks like!

Joshua, Two Fish, and Five Breads

One of the reasons we chose Caden's preschool is because it is a Christian preschool and Bible lessons are embedded in the curriculum.  I love to hear Bible stories told from a three-year-old's perspective.  Not long ago, I shared Caden's version of "Noah's Ark." Today, on the way home from the grocery store, Caden was singing "Go! Go! Joshua!" This is the conversation that followed:

Mom:  "Who is Joshua?"
Caden:  "Joshua has super powers!"
Mom:  "Really? What kind of super powers?"
Caden:  "There were two fish and five breads and not enough food for all the people.  So he got enough food for all of the people."
Mom:  "I think that was Jesus."
Caden:  "No, it was Joshua! God has super powers, too!"

Caden's Getting Married

Caden:  "Mom, I'm getting married."
Mom:  "To who?"
Caden: "It's not a girl.  It's bacon!"

I think we are going to have a t.v. free Spring Break!

Best Friends Forever

Caden asks Carter almost everyday, "Cart, do you wanna be best friends? Best friends forever?"

A Three-Year-Old's Interpretation of "Noah's Ark"

This boy is growing up way too quickly.  I have not written a post about the things he can do lately.  I think the main reason is because it would be easier to write a post about the things he can not do--just ask him!  In fact, when we try to do something for him, he says, "I can do it myself.  Did you forget?!" This boy is a sponge; he picks up language, songs, and stories so easily.  This week, at preschool, he learned about "Noah's Ark."  His version goes something like this:

"There were people.  And they loved money.  They didn't love God.  That's not good! Noah built an ark.  An ark is a big boat.  The animals got on the ark two-by-two.  It rained and rained and rained.  Noah sent out a bird.  It brought back a branch.  There was a rainbow.  And Noah had a promise for the people.  He promised he would never flood the 'erf' (earth) again."

You try to tell him that God had a promise for the people and not Noah! He knows EVERYTHING!

Patiently waiting for Nana & Papa

Or. . .maybe he just takes after his "Uncka"; his Uncka's version of "Noah's Ark" includes dinosaurs.

Caden Quotes

On the way to church. . .

Caden:  "Mom, can you help me make some peanut butter cups for my girl?"
Daddy:  "You have a 'girl'? Who's your 'girl'?"
Caden:  "I'm not talkin' about this right now!"

At school. . .

Teacher:  "Caden, what are you thankful for?"
Caden:  "For when I go poop!"

At bedtime. . .

Caden:  "Mom, I don't want to be a policeman anymore."
Mommy:  "You don't? What do you want to be?"
Caden:  "A rock star!"

Thanksgiving Day after "winning" a game of Candy Land. . .

Nana:  "Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose."
Caden:  "Ya, but you lose and Uncle Ryan lose and I won because I have a winner's shirt on! I'm a winner!" (While tugging at his "winner's" shirt.)

"2" or "22"?!

Sometimes I wonder how hold Caden thinks he is. . .

Lately, we've heard. . .

"Mom, don't follow me!" "Caden says 'yes'!" "I told you so!" "Get out of my room!" "Don't talk to me!" "Leave me alone!" "Shhhhh!" "That's ridiculous!" "Do you understand me?!" "Are you crazy?!" "What the heck?!" "I'm not talking to you anymore!" "Don't be so cross!" "Are you serious?! I'm not gonna do anymore tricks!"

"I've got a question." (Sometimes followed by a question, but usually not.) "I have a good idea." "Let me tell you about it." "It's got to be somewhere around here!" "That's weird!" "You can come with me if you want." "What can I do for you, Mom?" "Oh, my!" "Oh, man!" "Oh, baby!" "I'll be right back." (At the farm and the coast. . .where does he think he's going by himself already?!) "Holy moley, guacamole!" "Those colors are brilliant!" "Delicious!" "That bird is squawking!"

He has been preparing us for having two kids. . .

"Mama, Sasha's (his dog) watching me (eat)!" "Sasha, Mama doesn't listen to me!" "I don't want Sasha to play with me anymore.  She breaks everything!"

Some of my favorite "conversations". . .

Mama:  "Whatcha doin', Caden?"
Caden:  "Nuffin'!"

Caden:  "Here, Mom. This (plastic pancake) will make you feel better."
Mama:  "Thank you, Caden."
Caden:  "You need to go to the doctor.  Daddy will stay here and watch me."

Caden: "Come on, Mama.  You can do it!" (While watching me at 7 1/2 months preggos try to roll out of bed.)

Grandma: "Is Mommy tired?"
Caden: "No, Mommy's big!"

Caden: "Mom, come lay on the floor with me."
Mama:  "Caden, Mama can't lay on the floor anymore."
Caden:  "Yes you can.  Just try!"

And my favorite from today. . .

Caden:  "What a shame!"
Mama:  "What's a shame?"
Caden:  "My sheep went in my pee pee!" (After dropping his Fisher Price sheep in his potty chair. . .)

Talking to Nan, "Okay, okay, goodbye!"

From the Mouth of a Two-Year-Old

Caden says. . .

"It's so nice to meet you." "I'm so glad to see you." "You crack me up!" "It's a beautiful day, isn't it?" "Holy Moly!" "What the heck?!" "Oh my gosh!" "It's not fair!" "Daddy doesn't listen to me!" "It's too expensive.  You can't buy it!" "Leave the door open.  I'm scared of spiders." "I'm going to turn off the light.  You're wasting energy!" "Night sweetie." "That girl is a genius!" "This one (paintbrush) is pitiful." "I'll get one (a cookie).  You don't worry about it.  You just sit right there!" "I'm too nervous!" "I tickled Unca's feet and he screamed like a girl!" "It's not a boy.  It's a girl!" "I don't want fire in my underwear.  That would really hurt!"

and my favorite. . .

"I love you to the moon and back!"

Before I Forget. . .

Caden says. . .

1) "What's for dinner, Darlin'?"

2) "What's the matter, Hon?"

3) "Mom, what are you doing in Caden's room?"

4) "Mom, don't be ridiculous!"

5) Mommy:  "Caden, you need to put the shampoo in the bathroom."
     Caden:  "O-k-a-y, Mom.  Be patient!"

6) Mommy:  "Caden, I brought you a surprise!"
Caden:  "Oh, Mom! That was very sweet!"

7) Mommy:  "Caden, don't touch Mommy's laptop."
Caden:  "I said you need to share, Mom!"

Another Version of "Jesus Loves Me"?

Today, Caden was singing a version of "Jesus Loves Me" in the backseat that I have never heard before. . .

"Dinosaurs are scary
This I know
For the Bible tells me so. . ."

I think he's been hanging around his "Uncas" too much!

From the Mouth of a Two-Year-Old

In the car. . .

Mommy:  "Can you please turn Elmo off while we're in the car? He's kind of loud."

Caden:  "No! Good heavens!

Caden:  "Outside?"
Mommy:  "We can't go outside now because it's raining."
Caden:  "I need sunshine!"

From the Mouth of a Two-Year-Old

After spending the whole summer with Caden, it has been difficult going back to work and leaving him every day.  Especially when he says things like this when I get home. . .

"(L)ove you so much!" and "Miss you!"

However, a benefit of going back to work is that he lets me snuggle him now when I am home (when it is his idea of course).

From the Mouth of a Two-Year-Old

Caden LOVES to swim in his little pool in the nude.  The other day, after he got out of his pool, he was standing on the porch and had an accident. . .yes, #2!

He then asked me, "Eww, sick! How did it happen?!"
